Now Playing: English Premier League Matches in Dolby Atmos

English Premier League (EPL) fans have even more reason to look forward to this weekend as the 2017/18 season kicks off to the news that Dolby Atmos is coming to Sky Q.

Launching on Sky Sports’ new Premier League channel with FA cup winners Arsenal taking on Leicester City, this offering will allow Sky Q customers to experience 124 live Premier League games in immersive Dolby Atmos sound alongside Ultra HD video. Weekend fixtures also include Watford vs Liverpool, Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspurs, and Manchester United vs West Ham.

To experience the beautiful game in breathtaking sound, viewers need a Sky Q 2TB box, Sky Q Multiscreen subscription, and compatible Dolby Atmos speakers, TV, or Soundbar. But there’s much that goes on behind the scenes to deliver the ultimate football experience to living rooms of fans everywhere.

Behind the scenes

Outside each stadium, up to two outside broadcast (OB) trucks are required—one to capture the on-pitch action and one, if desired, to capture studio and onsite interviews. On some occasions, a feed can go straight from the stadium to the Sky Sports studios in London. Ahead of match day, a dedicated team will conduct final checks testing the trucks, the quality of the signals, and mic positions. On match day, running up to the game, video and audio connections are tested.

During the match, sounds from the stadium are captured and mixed into Dolby Atmos audio. The onsite team is available to support the sound mixer, advising on the quality of the match audio. This is made possible by speakers installed in the ceilings of the OB trucks, which enable the team to monitor the Dolby Atmos mix with overhead sound. The audio is then sent via Dolby’s ED2 workflow to the studio and then delivered into consumer homes using a satellite signal.

The launch follows a partnership with BT Sport earlier in the year, which saw selected EPL, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and FA Cup games broadcast live in Dolby Atmos. And with even more EPL games now available in the ultimate immersive experience, the game has never sounded so good!
