As you can imagine, at Dolby we’re just a little bit obsessed with the way movies sound and with the technology that goes into producing awesome movie experiences.

Of course, we’re exceptionally proud of Dolby® Atmos™, the newest cinema sound technology that lets moviemakers precisely place and move sounds anywhere in the theatre. But we also know that Dolby Atmos is built on what the cinema industry learned from the many cinema sound technologies that went before it – some created by Dolby and some by other innovators.

In that spirit, we created this infographic that documents the development of cinema sound technology from some of the first scratchy sounds in commercial films to the incredibly detailed audio of current blockbusters like Gravity.

We know we haven’t included every significant development in cinema sound. Let us know about your favorite movie sound moments in the comments.
